What is Modem?

The modem is the short form of Modulator-Demodulator. By the way, a modem is an electronic device which converts computer’s digital signals into some specific frequencies which travel over telephone or cable television lines.

So computers generally use modems for communication with each other over a network. Hence overall Modem is a signal. As a result, it transmits data easily and reproduces the original digital data.

It does bi-directional communication via radio frequency channels on Hybrid Fibre-Coaxial (HFC) and Radio Frequency over Glass (RFoG).

What are the types of Modem?

Modems are categorized on the basis of services;

  1. Cable Modems
  2. DSL Modems
  3. Satellite Modems

   1. DSL Modems:

Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) is used to connect personal computer internet. In short, gives services for connectivity to the internet. DSL service allows a user to talk on the phone and simultaneously access the internet. DSL modems use either the USB  port or Ethernet port.

     2. Cable Modems:

The cable modem is a medium which works through a cable provider. It does bi-directional communication via radio frequency channels on Hybrid Fibre-Coaxial (HFC) and Radio Frequency over Glass (RFoG). This modem gives broadband internet access in the form of cable internet by taking high bandwidth of HFC and RFoG.

     3. Satellite Modems:

Satellite is slow and hard to come by. So satellite modems are less in use. However, the modem is usually only in remote locations. The main function of this modem is to transform an input bitstream to a radio signal.

How does Modem work?

The modem used to send digital information over a telephone line. Frequency shift keying used for converting purpose. Hence the modem modulates the digital data into a signal. In addition to the modem is decoded the phone line. Phase shift keying was the first technique. Modems faster were made using Phase shift keying

Conclusion:

If you want the best modem connection, then you need to develop the internet speed as well as the best computer hardware. Above given modems are now in use. But satellite modem is in less useful. So it is very slow and difficult to use. Hence go for cable and DSL modem.
